📈BSC News Exclusive all you should know about 🏦Business in the Week Ahead (June 19-23, 2023)
Central banks have made their intentions quite clear: they will go to any length to get a handle on inflation. Next week, it’s the BoE’s turn to spell out its policy move. Other than that, a few other policy minutes and macro numbers will keep the ball rolling for investors. Look out for an IPO too
If you think a rate pause is here to stay, courtesy the latest policy actions by Fed and RBI, brace for uncertainties ahead. There is official confirmation that the El Nino has set in and that’s not good news on the price front. Also, the US central bank is taking note of the traction in US economic growth.
Does that mean that a rate cut is out of the window? Not really, some policymakers see a rate reduction cycle kicking in from next year onwards.
On his part, the RBI governor has his eyes firmly fixed on the 4 percent inflation target, which the central bank hopes to achieve in the medium term. And that has been mostly because of a decline in inflation – both CPI and WPI. But according to the governor, the process of disinflation is going to be slow and protracted.
On the NPA front, there is something to cheer. Thanks to loan growth and a stable credit environment, bad loans are on the way down. That’s reflecting in the balance sheet of banks, whose asset quality has improved, with gross NPAs hitting a low not seen in more than a decade.
What more cues do you need to make your investment move? We lay down the fine print for the week ahead.
Tuesday (June 20)
HMA Agro to hit IPO Street: HMA Agro Industries is coming out with its IPO on June 20 for subscription, which will run till June 23. It has set the price band for its Rs 480-crore public issue at Rs 555-585 a share. The anchor bids will start on June 19.
The stock is scheduled to list on the exchanges on July 4. At the upper end of the price band, the company is valued at Rs 2780 crore. HMA Agro plans to raise Rs 150 crore through the fresh issue and Rs 330 crore from an offer-for-sale from its shareholders and promoters.
US Building Permits: Building permits in the United States came off by 1.4 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.4 million in April, according to revised data. This marked the second straight month of decline, pointing to muted housing demand due to the impact of higher interest rates and rising consumer prices. The next preliminary figure for May will throw more light.
Wednesday (June 21)
BoJ Monetary Policy Meeting Minutes: The Bank of Japan kept unchanged its key short-term interest rate at -0.1 percent in April through a unanimous vote. Under the newly appointed Governor Kazuo Ueda, the board also decided to hold a broad review of the monetary policy trajectory, with a planned time frame of around 1 to 1-1/2 years. The minutes due on Wednesday will detail the deliberations of the review meeting.
Thursday (June 22)
BoE Interest Rate Decision: In its previous policy meet, the Bank of England raised the bank rate by 25 bps to 4.5 percent in May. That marked the twelfth consecutive rate increase, in line with market expectations. The central bank is looking to meet the 2 percent inflation target by late 2024. The next policy meet is scheduled for Thursday.
UK MPC Meeting Minutes: The UK central bank sees inflation falling to 5.1% in Q4 2023, compared to 3.9% in the February forecast. What all happened in its May policy meeting? The minutes slated for Thursday will make it clear.
US Initial Jobless Claims: The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits stood at 262,000 on the week ending June 10, which came on top of market expectations of 249,000. The result lends credence to some softening in the US labour market after a sticky tightness. Reason? US businesses have started to feel the impact of the Federal Reserve’s aggressive tightening overdrive.
Friday (June 23)
Foreign Exchange Reserves: Foreign exchange reserves in India rose to $595.07 billion for the week to June 2, from $589.14 billion in the previous week. The of
